Welcome to my blog! My name is Emily Bender and I am a senior English major at the University of Florida. This blog is a representation of the work done in Professor Ulmer’s class in the spring of 2009. This project is in place in order to reflect the books discussed in class, which include Six Memos for the Next Millennium written by Italo Calvino and Electronic Literature by Katherine Hayles. The purpose of this class is also to make apparent the changes being made to the way some literature is formed electronically in today’s society and how it is different from past writing. There are three pages at the top of my blog. The first is the “about” page which you are looking at now. The second is a “memos” page that describes the requirements for that part of the assignment. The last page contains all the posts regarding Calvino’s memos.
Calvino discusses the qualities he finds invaluable in literature and our blog must have posts written about each quality in Six Memos for the Next Millennium. Hayle’s text, Electronic Literature discusses how this new literary format, “e-lit”, is making its way into modern day society. My classmates and I must tie in Hayles’ work somehow for each of the quality posts in our blog as well. This blog will be a good reference for people wishing to understand the works of Calvino and Hayles better. This is because there are in-depth examples and emblems of Calvino’s literary qualities encompassed in the website which will be informative for those wanting to learn more.
