Text

I chose to interpret The Color Purple written by Alice Walker for the second part of my project. I read this book for a Women’s Confessional Literature class this semester and decided that its importance in the world of print literature would make it a good book to focus on for Professor Ulmer’s class as well. The Color Purple has so many different aspects to it. There are themes of love and hate and the text also discusses the cyclical nature of racism and prejudice against women. Gender roles are challenged, and I thought it was important to address those roles in this blog. I also found many symbols in The Color Purple that could tie into the Decoding Design book by Maggie Macnab. Colors are recurring in the text as well as the idea of God and strength and how strength is attained. Celie gains strength from learning how to sew pants so pants are an important symbol in the text also. I hope that this blog informs people on how narratives can be interpreted symbolically as well as show them how elements from Calvino’s text are ever present and a part of print literature too.
